Antarctica ice desert
Antarctica ice desert keeps many secrets of life on Earth. Newly opened in 1820, the continent of Antarctica is a vast ice desert. This is the highest continent on Earth-half of its surface rises over 2000 meters.
This is the driest (even drier than the Sahara), the coldest (here in 1983. Was measured lowest temperature record in world-89,2’S) and windiest (rekorna winds reaching over 320 km / h) in the world.
And despite all this, Antarctica holds magnificent beauty. Here are 5 of them.
1. Zavodovski island. It was discovered by Russians in 1819, the island is among the most densely populated places in the world of penguins. Each spring 14 mil. Penguins couples come here to nest as krill, their main food is abundant. Located 1800 km.
east of Antaktida and 6 km in diameter.
2. Antarctica dry valley. These are three massive steep valleys Taylor, Wright and Victoria, where the average annual rainfall is only 25 mm. and the snow does not stay because of dry winds, which it is blown away.
Each valley has several salt lakes. The biggest is Wanda. Deep is over 60 meters. with 4m. ice cover.
However bottom temperature was 25 ‘C, because the ice acts as a greenhouse glass and heats the water.
3. A ridge PLATEAU. It has a height of 405
3 m. And leads the driest place on Earth. The water content in the atmosphere has a thickness of a human hair.
4. Shelf Ross glacier. Fills the huge bay that cuts in Antarctica. It stretches from east to west about 800 km. and entering of 970 kilometers. inland overhanging the sea ice in places rise of 60 m., and the ice in the southern reaches 750 m. depth.
The glacier is moving steadily towards the sea at a speed of 1.5 to 3 m.
5.Mount Erebus volcano. Elevated at 3794 m. Over ice fields, it is one of three volcanoes in the world with constant lava. Here they can meet both fire and ice.
Hot water vapor abound from inside the earth and as break the ice, steam freezes and forms several meters of smoking chimneys, called fumarole (sometimes up to 20 m.)
Active summit crater is deep 275 m. And spewing clouds of sulfur smoke and ejected lava high into air.
